This technique is intended to help your partner to prepare your perineum so that it will be more able to stretch successfully during the birthing of your baby's head. This procedure should be commenced about 6 weeks before your due date.

Firstly, find a comfortable position so that your partner will have access to your perineum. You may want to sit up on the bed supported by pillows or lie in your side with your top leg slightly more bent than the bottom one. Another option is to make yourself comfortable over a beanbag or a pile of pillows.

Have your partner massage your perineal area with almond oil or coconut oil for a few minutes allowing you time to relax and get comfortable with the sensation.

Your partner will then insert two fingers along the back of the vaginal wall. He should apply firm, consistent, parallel, pressure on the perineum, keeping his fingers straight.

When you feel a burning sensation ask him to stop.

Tearing is normal and if you do tear the doctors stitch you up. This has nothing to do with your vagina because the vagina goes back to pre-pregnancy size right after your baby comes out. You can have your boyfriend/husband do a perineal massage before you have your baby, maybe once a day and when you are having contractions he could also do the massage then.

you could do Kegels (practice tightening/relaxing the muscles down there). Other than that, just that during labor tell your doctor that you would like to try not to tear or get an episiotomy, so they don't try to rush you. Also remember, even if it does happen, although it may take longer to recover, it will recover.

My midwife told me that kegels will help. Also, you can do perineal massage. If you have a midwife for your delivery, she can also ease pressure there while the baby is coming out. They have lots of special techniques to help, like using a warm wet cloth for counterpressure.
