Interesting perspective...
Why do roses have thorns? Roses orignally grew in area which had large numbers of herbivores, plant eating animals such as cows and rabbits. Rose foliage and flowers are sweet tasting (rose petals can be eaten and a tea can be made out of certain parts of the flower).
Many animals seek out sweet tasting plants, so the rose was and instant target. The roses with thorns were less likely to be eaten and therefore survived and reproduced.
If the roses didnt have thorns they probably would have been eaten and then there would be no roses for us and THAT wouldnt be fair.
The sweetest smelling roses have the worst thorns...its to protect them!

You have made a very interesting proposition here. I don't think that 'fairness' per se enters into it. Of course a lot of guys give fair ladies fair roses which is an interesting metaphor since ladies don't have thorns, though a relationship might prove to be a thorny problem. Each critter has its mode of protection and this is Rose's. A brief encounter with a thorn in the nose while you are trying to smell one is just its way of telling you not to try and run through a patch of roses. You've been warned and that's fair.

The Yin and Yang. For every good, there is a bad. Everything has its opposite. The rose is beautiful because of this. Without it's pain (as in the thorn), there could be no way to relate to it. It gives it that "emotion" which all things have. It gives humanity a reason to care for what is around us.
And life is in no way fair. It is balanced, but not fair.

If people see you on the street, they can look at you but cannot touch you. Isn't that fair? So the rose is saying look but do not touch.
Actually the universe will do anything to motivate you to achieve your purpose. No amount of misery is too much when doing this. This purpose is to feel perfect peace and limitless happiness all the time. See the site below for more on this.

Roses have thorns for protection. From animals, especially the human species. From breakage, from being picked.
Smell the roses, but don't pick them. Let nature do its thing.

To teach us that not everything is what it seems and that even something as beautiful as a Rose has something about it that can hurt you if your not careful. Don't judge something or someone by it's cover (Beautiful or Ugly) cuz you never know what's underneath the surface. :-D

Like the dog bites, birds flutter their wings, similarly roses have thorns.
