no Jack and rose were made up charaters for the movie because lets be honest a ovie about a boat even if it is the titanic would get dull but the coal workers did keep the boat lighted ad heated until their last moments. So half is based on reality and the other half is fiction.

there was a Jack Dawson aboard but he was a member of the crew, one of the coal passers who worked to the end...as Titanic settled by the bow, stokers ( as they were called) would work till the last second, then abandon the boiler and engine rooms in turn.....power went out about 8 minutes before she plunged...none of the engineering staff....crew or officers...coming up from the 100 degree fire rooms, under-dressed for the freezing conditions, and too late for what lifeboats there were...survived

The movie in general was fairly correct; it added the detail not generally remembered ( until Ballard found the wreck and confirmed it) that the stern broke away from the hull when she was at maximum down angle just beforre she dove.

If you want another, and more correct without the romantic foofoo, movie, go rent " A Night To Remember"

they were just the characters of the movie titanic only....

This spectacular epic re-creates the ill-fated maiden voyage of the White Star Line's $7.5 million R.M.S Titanic and the tragic sea disaster of April 15, 1912. Running over three hours and made with the combined contributions of two major studios (20th Century-Fox, Paramount) at a cost of more than $200 million, Titanic ranked as the most expensive film in Hollywood history at the time of its release, and became the most successful. Writer-director James Cameron employed state-of-the-art digital special effects for this production, realized on a monumental scale and spanning eight decades. Inspired by the 1985 discovery of the Titanic in the North Atlantic, the contemporary storyline involves American treasure-seeker Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) retrieving artifacts from the submerged ship. Lovett looks for diamonds but finds a drawing of a young woman, nude except for a necklace. When 102-year-old Rose (Gloria Stuart) reveals she's the person in the portrait, she is summoned to the wreckage site to tell her story of the 56-carat diamond necklace and her experiences of 84 years earlier. The scene then shifts to 1912 Southampton where passengers boarding the Titanic include penniless Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and society girl Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), returning to Philadelphia with her wealthy fiance Cal Hockley (Billy Zane). After the April 10th launch, Rose develops a passionate interest in Jack, and Cal's reaction is vengeful. At midpoint in the film, the Titanic slides against the iceberg and water rushes into the front compartments. Even engulfed, Cal continues to pursue Jack and Rose as the massive liner begins its descent.

In the graveyard for the vicitims of the Titanic disaster in Halifax, Nova Scotia, there is a tombstone for a 'J. Dawson.' I did see this tombstone with my own eyes, and I did take a pic. Whether or not he was the person portrayed in the film Titanic is highly unlikely. Nobody remembers Rose's last name. I think they tried to be as accurate as possible in the film, but even still, much that was shown is only speculation, since it looks entertaining on the big screen.

These two characters are fictional but the movie itself very accurately portrays the social hierarchy and limitations of the time. "The lower classes" were blocked from coming up on deck before the upper classes had been safely taken into the boats. Many of the lower classes were never able to come up on top and drowned before they could. Just the fact that the ship did not have enough rescue boats for all the passengers tells you that the White Line Company considered these passengers to be dispensable.
