Why should anyone be annoyed? Is it their restaurant? Doesn't everyone deserve to eat in a restaurant? A lot of people do. Especially the working class. Why should they have to find someone to go with when they are hungry and have to get back to work. What about the new person in town? They have the right to go out and eat. And our Senior citizens. Some do not have anyone to go with, don't want to cook and enjoy going out just to be with people. Come on!
What a question!!
And shame on everyone that thinks it looks pathetic!!!

Actually sometimes you meet people by doing this but I must admit I only go to certain places when I do this I don't go to really crowded steakhouses unless they have a bar area that I can sit away from the dining area because I don't want to look like the third wheel of 34 couples and 15 tables full of families and girlfriends, guy friends whatever but in the bar area you may meet other people eating alone.
I have been accused of prostitution in some finer establishments which I was not happy about at all because I had on a white guy like button collar shirt top with a jean skirt which was just barely touching my knee and some cute expensive boots, my hair was all fixed and cute, and I had on natural makeup applied. It was at the Oceanaire during the holidays and I wanted an appetizer and cocktail before going to do a little shopping in the Galleria around 5ish in the evening. Horrifying to say the least
Men eat and drink out all the time alone why can't we do it as women is what I always think because if I can pay for it then they need to mind their business and serve me just like they would a man. ;~) Happy Eating!

Not in the slightest. How can it be considered pathetic or annoying to see someone eating on there own? The two have never entered my head ever when i have seen someone eating alone. In fact nothing enters my head at all, i dont give it a second though. Maybe because you are young and a little insecure you feel this. Just go alone the world will not stop turning and other dinners whether on there own or with company are not thinking about you and what your doing there alone I'm sure. Get over it, take the plunge and eat alone. You never know it might be a liberating experience for you. Today a restaurant, tomorrow climbing the Himalaya's?

I would only think it was pathetic if the person looked that way, but not just from them dining alone would I think that. I go out to eat by myself sometimes bc I don't have the luxury of having my boyfriend in the same state as me.
What is annoying is when a single person sits at a table for a group of people-clearly for 6 or more- and there are plenty of other places for them to sit.
Go for it-enjoy that steakhouse! A good steakhouse is hard to come by nowadays!

Why would a person dining alone annoy me? I would just simply assume that person is probably introverted and enjoys spending time alone, which I can respect. So, if you're wanting to go eat out and your friends won't sacrifice to go with you, then go by yourself and be your own person instead of bowing into the wishes of others.
However, I encourage you to take a book or a magazine to read. Eating alone without something to read does look a little pathetic.

I don't think its pathetic nor annoying. I eat at restaurants by myself sometimes. However, the first time I ate alone in a restaurant...I felt lonely... :(.Try to find someone else to eat with or once they bring the food ask for the check, then pay and ask for a take-out box (don't forget the bread!) and eat at home.

I go and eat out alone all the time. Why would that be pathetic or annoying? If I am out running errands or working and I need to eat, I go. I usually bring along a book or something to keep me company.

My husband and I just got back from having dinner out and I noticed at least 5 tables of people dinning alone. I think it was really cool. Four of them were women and they were enjoying their evening. They had cocktails and a dinner. I think it is a great way to enjoy your meal. You can stay as long as you want and order whatever you want. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you could take a book or cellphone but I really wouldn't. I eat out alone often and love it.

You get better service, can eat as slow or fast as you want, don't have to make up small talk, can choose your own table without anyone saying..."but I'd like to sit by the window, bathroom, bar, back....etc." I think it is fun to go alone. I feel like a kid in a candy store. Put your feet up and order a drink! Cheers!
