In the1983 NFL Draft he refused to play for the Baltimore Colts. He was drafted by Baltimore with the first pick in the draft but the Colts owner Robert Irsay gave in and traded him to the Denver Broncos. The Broncos traded QB Mark Herrmann, rights to OL Chris Hinton and a first-round pick (OG Ron Solt) in the 1985 NFL Draft on May 2, 1983 for John Elway.

Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago was the 1st #1 Overall Pick in NFL History by the Eagles in 1936, he never played in the NFL due to a contract dispute, he was asking for a 2 year contract worth $12,500 which was a huge amount of money @ that time. Billy Cannon was the #1 Overall Pick in the 1960 NFL Draft out of LSU by the Rams, he decided to sign with the Houston Oilers of the AFL instead. In 1979, #1 Overall Pick Tom Cousineau, a LB from Ohio State, opted to sign with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL rather than sign with the Bills. John Elway refused to play for the Colts when they drafted him #1 Overall in 1983, he was then traded to the Denver Broncos. Bo Jackson was drafted #1 Overall in 1986, by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he refused to sign & reentered the Draft in 1987, where he was selected by the Raiders in the 7th Round. Eli Manning was drafted by the Chargers in 2004 #1 Overall & was traded to the Giants in exchange for Phillip Rivers

What many do not know is the why. Elway refused to play for the Colts because of Colts owner Irsay. It seems Elways father and Irsay had had a long stand quarrell and out of respect for his father Elway refused to play for him. Elway also was drafted by the Yankees in baseball and could have played in their farm system had the trade to Denver not been worked out.
