Here is what happened:

A couple years back my dad set up our wireless network. A few weeks ago two of us in the family purchased new laptops and now we don't know the password.

So now I am trying to make a new network. I got my computer plugged in it recognizes a router and the internet with wires. I am trying to now create the wirless part in windows vista it is telling me that I need to manually configure the router. From there it takes me to the IP website where it pops up for a password. I found on the internet that for my router a linksys it says type in the Username and password as "admin". However the IP thingy is not taking that and won't allow me to create the new network.

Please Help. I am completely computer illiterate and I need my internet!

You need to re-set the router using the tiny reset button on it's back. You then need to follow the instructions in the manual to set up all your details from scratch. So before you start, download and print the manual, as you will lose the connection for a short time. Check that you have your isp login name and password. You will need to enter these again. Always keep a note of these details.

You do not need to be computer literate to follow simple installation instructions.

Go back to the linksys website and download the install and user guides for the model of router you have.

You just cant make a new network without knowing the password to get into your router.

Find the instructions on how to reset your router back to its default state and then follow the install instructions from the beginning to set the router backup so you can get internet access. Then your new computers should connect to the router and work just fine.

There is a hole in the back of the router, get a pen or pencil with a point that you can insert into that.... and hold it there for a few seconds... this will reset it back to the default of user name Linksys and password to admin.. good luck

you need to start via making specific you have no longer have been given extra suitable than one DHCP server on your community. it relatively is the community provider that provides out the IP address (once you spot the 'procuring address' message). in case you had a modem out of your ISP and you extra a prompt router, there's plausible that the two have a DHCP server enabled. different than that - confirm your router has the main present firmware. additionally, examine to confirm your computing gadget has the main present prompt drivers. you're dazzling to think of there is something incorrect - getting onto the prompt community must be a lot extra mushy/stable that what you're experiencing. And your WPA encryption isn't the priority - save that became on ! ;-) 11/10 - in reaction to your addtl info, try disabling DHCP on your router. If it makes it worse (i.e. you by no ability get an IP from now on), turn it back on. it relatively is not very probably it relatively is the priority, it became into the 1st ingredient i seen once you pronounced the priority became into consistently whilst 'procuring' the address. maximum modems/routers presented via the ISP only 'bridge' the relationship and don't supply DHCP to LAN customers. besides the shown fact that, I relatively have seen some configured this manner. If this would not artwork, circulate onto checking drivers and firmware. many makers often replace the firmware for his or her routers to ensure subject concerns.

If you have linksys, go to 192.168.1.1

Leave the username blank, and put as the password 'admin'. This should let you in.

Good luck!
