Why is this? It just startred doing this last night, and it did it again this evening. GROSS. What could be wrong?

A clogged trap. ~
My first step in fixing that is using a plunger (plumber's friend) and with water in the sink, pumping that up and down. If that doesn't do it, you may have to open the trap and clean it out separately. Only problem with that is getting things water tight again after the work.

sounds to me like your drain pipe is clogged at the point past where the sink drain meets the dishwasher drain. have you tried something like Drano? If that doesn't do it then you (or your plumber) might have to dismantle the pipe and remove the clog manually.

Your trap or "S" trap could be partially plugged, the aerator, the little knob that's suppose to be on the top back of the sink might be plugged. Clean all of these and see what happens.
