If you're looking for a great comparison, try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Office#Comparison_of_UK_and_US_versions.

From personal experience, I think the main difference really comes from the fact that each are designed to appeal to a different audience. The British show's humor is very dry; a lot of British humor comes more from an "Oh my god!" uncomfortable source than a "Haha that's funny!" source. While the American office captures this element, it is catered more towards the American audience, who has a shorter attention span and a craving for goofy situations.

As far as which one is better, I think it depends on which one you see first. After becoming obsessed with the American Office, I got out a DVD of the British version. It was funny, but it didn't capture my attention the way the American one does. Also, I had become so attached to Michael, Jim, Pam, and Dwight, that I couldn't help but not care as much about their British counterparts (David, Tim, Dawn, and Gareth).

I hope this helps!!!

Both are funny. The British show is a bit racier, but similarities exist between both.
