Its a "want" depending on how you define "relationship". Most scientists say that as human beings, we are inherently social animals, we "need" community and thus we "need" relationships as transient as saying "hi" to the mailman. That being said, if you are asking in context of some sort of angst over losing a loved one, I would respectfully suggest that as long as you are true to yourself and don't think you have to be codependent on someone else, then again, a relationship is a "want", not a "need". I'm sure many will disagree. Since our divorce rate in the USA is over 60%, there is clearly confusion on the issue :)

It's absolutely a want. In order to be happy in a relationship you should be able to be on your own, to "need" a relationship makes you a needy person who is reliant on someone else to make you happy.

depends on the relationship i think, but mostly a want. i always here of a old woman dying then a few months later her husband of 50 yrs (exaggeration) dies. heartbreak or old age?

It's a want. People are perfectly capable of living happy lives single. The stupid media makes everyone feel bad if they don't have someone.
