400/17 = 23.52 guests. Since you cant have 0.52 guests, you need 24 guests. The total charge would be 17 x 24 = 408.


everyones charge would be exactly 17.

24 people, take 400 divide it by 17 and round up so the total is over 400. The average is a red herring, it has nothing to do with the answer to the problem because the rate is constant.

you need to divide the 400 into 17.
you'll get an answer of 23.5294
we know that we could not have a number of guests that would be equal to 23.5294, so you'll be needing 24 guests.=)
you kinda need to round off.
and also, if you're going to have only 23 guests, you'll only have $391. so you really need to have 24 guests to achieve $400. it would be better that you exceed.=)
