Once upon a time... before thongs became wildly popular, there were thongs, more or less, and they were called g-strings. They literally, usually, only had a string around the waist and one running straight down into heaven and under and up the back. Why did we have them? Well, that is the better, and next, question...
Strippers wore them. Most states allowed strippers to work, but few allowed them to work naked. Those that did, like Ohio, allowed EITHER work naked, but the business can't serve (and profit greatly from) alcohol OR keep various things covered (nipples (call me when you hear about "pasties"), vagina, and sometimes, the, mmm, other opening) and serve all the liquor it could sell. Different states had different laws about how much of the vagina had to be covered and so g-strings actually varied somewhat to conform, more or less.
Naturally, ex-strippers and of course, any woman who knew where to buy them (stores would sell them, but not KMart) could obviously wear them in personal life, but since they were not particularly sexy unless a girl was almost naked (unlike thongs which have evolved to be pretty interesting with a small or large part revealed by the rest of a girl's outfit), the market was fairly small and it was mostly just a nice extra bit of sexiness when you found a girl wearing one.
So, in short, g-strings were the forerunner of the thong girls know and love today.
