Where does one draw the line to individualism from mob mentality, or as I call it "becoming a sheep"?

When I registered to vote for the first time (a long *ss time ago), the person that helped me to fill out the register card told me, "You're black, you're democrat." So I was "herded" into a group that I didn't understand or know about. I was told to "check this box" just because of my race.

That, along with other things have made me think about this "sheep" thing. Dr. Phil has sheep, Brangelina have sheep, Oprah has a LOT of sheep.

Just a question that has been on my mind.

Dislike of conflict is the usual cause for sheep.
This is an excellent question and I think to fully understand it you might want to investigate at least the myers briggs type test personalities. I am an ESTJ and the last thing on my list is sheep. Any time I am in a sheep group, I want to scream. I think it is because I am an open minded thinker. My daughter is like totally different from me as was her father, and still is, but we divorced long ago. Angie is 28 and we can hardly talk to each other even tho we love each other so I have been investigating these 16 personality types to understand hers and oh my, we are only 16 personalities apart ??? But when I read hers, I don't think she and her day are "crazy": any more, just different.and Gary Larson once had a cartoon and in this huge flock of sheep, one stood up on its hind legs and yelled "We don't all have to be sheep" and I finally found myself. I am a very very strong leader personatlity and the minute someone says "you have to ".......oh the hair on the back of my neck immediately goes up. Some are followers and some are leaders and as my wise daughter taught me, mom, if you are in a group and asking too many questions and upsetting the group, get out, you are a leader not a follower and that really helped me understand what was happening to me too. Nurture By Nature is an excellent book that every parent with a child under 18 should have a copy of like a "bible" for raising. If I had had this 28 years ago, I think my daughter and I would be much closer.

That reminds me of this part in "To Kill a Mockingbird" when the men of the town are coming after Atticus for defending a black man in court. Then when the little girl sees the mob she starts picking out certain individuals from the group and asking things like "How's your family?" It reminds everyone in the crowd that they have their own opinions, families, and lives, and they didn't need to go with the crowd, especially when the crowd was doing something bad.

I tend to make my decisions with that little feeling in my gut and a dose of logic.... if it goes with the herd then good if it doesn't then good.
