Yes, he was on Oprah with the person The Pursuit of Happyness was written about and he learned how to solve it specifically for the movie. They gave him one and during the commercial break he worked on it and had it solved by the time the show came back on. The audience, etc verified he was not cheating, etc.

Some kids taught me to solve the rubik's cube in boarding school in Hungary. Dem kids are awesome with the cube. they showed me how to make a checker pattern out of the cube and change the centermost square on all six sides without disturbing the rest of the solved cube.

Its not that hard to solve one, my friend just got one and learned how to do it and can probably solve one in under 10 minutes. As to if he can, who knows? only him and the cast will know probably, but they way you worded your question"I say his character did it on the movie." he is the character so technically, he did. what he was doing on screen looked right though so he might be able to after a lot of practice, or maybe someone just told him every second what to do. personally i think he can
