So I'm low on cash, so I am going to buy a barebones kit from a website. The kit I want has the mobo, case, cpu and power supply in a bundle. So I was going to buy the right ram for the new motherboard and stick everything else thats in my current computer into the new one. They all work fine. So my hard drive is what I'm curious about. It has all my info on it, and so can I put that in the new computer without the computer going crazy on me, or will I need to reformat it and reinstall windows? Thanks for any input.

Assuming it is a compatible type IDE, SATA you can install it.

The old hard drive will not boot on a different computer. You should be able to get around this by performing a repair install.

You probably will have to call Microsoft during validation and explain you upgraded your computer as it may think you you have installed the XP copy on two different computers and refuse to validate XP.

Repair install. (should not lose data) Backup files first.

Yes. Your second drive is basically storage. If you are buying a larger hard drive to replace a smaller hard drive you just need to make sure that the new/used (larger hard drive) should be set to master and the smaller older drive is set to slave. You also need to transfer the data from the current drive to the one you just bought. It will not do it on its own and you need software to do so. (this is only if you want the larger drive as your master and smaller one as your slave) If it does not matter and you just need a backup hard drive, just keep the one you have as the master and set the one you just bought as slave. The one you just bought will be the drive you back data up on and is there just in case the master drive goes bad.

Unless you like errors galore, I would recommend you reinstalling windows. That includes formatting it. You can use the hard-drive on your new comp. Just remember to back up any files you want, then format and install.

As long as the hard drive is not very old. The older the hard drive the slower it will be.

If you move the harddrive into the new computer and use the same motherboard you should be fine.
