Ramayana was originally compiled by Valmiki in Dwapar Yuga that is atleast 12 lakhs year before. Those days books where not written. Disciple has such sharp memories that they would never forget if they hear once. It was later on written down and then copied many many time and copies preserved and now printed. Ramacharitmanas compiled recently by Tulsidasa is also maintained by copies of the original.
