I went away on vacation for two weeks, leaving fish feedings to my brother. When I came back home 5 tetras were dead, two male guppies, and one African dwarf frog. I did about a 50% water change everything was fine. One week later my friend told me to do another 50% water change. now one female baby guppy is swimming in the corner staring at the corner, and a male mollie is resting on the rocks at the bottom of the tank, but still alive. What should I do immiadietly? Tommorow i might have time to stop at a fish store...

The best thing to do right now is stop and think... make sure you added dechlorinator to the new water. I know, I know, but it's an easy mistake to make and every fish keeper has done it before. I can't tell you how many times I have done it over the years.

Other than that the best thing to do is turn off the light and allow them to settle down after the big water change. They are stressed from some big changes in their environment, any thing else you do will just make more changes and more stress.

All these large water changes have disrupted the biological filter. You have to stop. To help re-establish the bacteria, you may want to use a supplement like StressZyme or Hagen Cycle, which in my 11+ years experience of being an aquarium store employee, manager and presently owner, prove very beneficial dealing with "mini-cycles" after a water change. This is most likely even more than what one would call a mini-cycle.

do not do another water change... you shouldnt really change more than 30% of the water at one time.

like a previous responder said... keep the light off...

you can also add salt (not table salt lol) but from the pet store.

the only other thing i would add would be the stuff that helps fish slime... yeah it sounds gross but fish has a slime on them to keep them healthy

It doesn't sound like they'll survive... =^(

Next time, leave the feeding to someone more responsible.

If I left my sister in charge of feeding, they'd all be belly up within a few days.

It sounds as though your brother killed them with kindness. It might be worth calling into that fish store and investing in some nice fresh fish. I have tetra's and it is impossible to kill them!

hmmm... i say next time if you go on a vacation, buy one of those timed automatic feeders. I have one in my tank because I go off on vacations a lot.

do another 50% water change. make sure its the same temprature of water or it will go into shock. your fish may survive. or not but just hope they do try and feed them a little bit and scold your brother.
