After I use chicken wire for the shape, what do I put on top to make it look like a real volcano? I'm using soda and mentos for the explosion or lava or whatever you call it. And could I use something so that I don't need chicken wire?

Papier mache or Plaster of Paris soaked gauze strips as used on casts, or flour and water paste on paper strips. The outside can be left bumpy, textured like the volcano type of ouur choice. Because of your choice of things to demonstrate the explosion, do not choose a strato volcano. There the lava rolls out and over things creating a dome shape. Ifyou want this type, use vinegar and soda.

Paper mache and poster paints would be what I would use.
