It depends on which gene is dominate and which is recessive- for example- my daughter has brown eyes like I do- therefore my brown eyed gene was dominant over her fathers blue eye gene- but I have a son with blue eyes and his dad has hazel eyes- so in his case his fathers genes combined with mine to create his blues eyes from a brown eyed mom and a hazel eyed father- so cool isn't it?

Each of us have a trait for making melanin, a brown pigment, in our eyes. This involves 1 gene from each parent. All you need is one gene to have brown eyes, since brown is dominant. If neither of your genes produce melanin, then other pigments may be seen from another gene, either green, blue or something else.

Hello! I am a recent grad student in biology. DNA codes for RNA which codes for proteins. These proteins are what gives us our phenotype, or visible traits. Depending on the proteins your DNA codes for involving pigments is what determines eye color, hair color, skin color, etc. There is so much more involved in the process but that is simplest way I can explain it. I hope this helps. btw, did you know that blue eye color is actually caused by a mutation in a persons gemome?!?!
