It is not actually a dot at all. Its the eye of god and it see all!! Thats how that letter got its name. So, when you read porn watch out because gods watching!!! Well, unless there are no lower case "i"s then you are ok to go for a turn or two!!

Nobody else has said this and I don't remember where it came from, but I've always thought the dot of an i was called a jot and the cross of the t was referred to as a tittle.

Apparently it's called a diacritic mark or a dot.
"When used as a diacritic mark, the term dot is usually reserved for the Interpunct ( · ), or to the glyphs 'combining dot above' ( Ì )" but as previously stated, it's usually a sousaphone player in the Ohio State marching band.

The dot is just called a superscript dot. it was added to the letter i in the middle ages to distinguish it from other letters :)

If you are really serious-it is a dot. If it was at the end of a sentence, it would be a full-stop.

"tittle" is basically an all inclusive description of those little marks above letters. Thing is, the lowercase [i] would not be a lowercase [i] without the dot which tells me that the dot is actually a PART of that letter.
