The oil companies are getting rich because the supply is shrinking and the demand is growing: less oil = higher prices in a high demand situation. Also, Americans like to drive SUVs the size of minor planets at warp speeds, and seem stubbornly addicted to this practice. The Iraq situation makes the oil supply situation unstable which also makes oil more expensive. There are lots of factors involved, but it ultimately all boils down to supply and demand. And greed.
