and how can you generally tell if someone fits the description?

Polymath comes out of 2 Greek words Poly=Very or Various
and math=learn

so in English is a person who learns variety or knows various of knowledgeable information.
You can only tell someone he is a polymath only if he is a
very intelligent or smart!
