Well, it depends on your car. Most imports are made with the cigarette lighter socket switched, meaning the key has to be in the "on" or "accessory" position in order to have power going to it, where as most domestic vehicles have power going to them at all times. I have an older import car, and installed a 12V socket in my car that I wired to a constant power source so that I can use it without having the key in the car.
