I've seen a lot of it lately. Mostly against blacks, but also against homosexuals, Jews, and Muslims. Do you think it's because people usually don't have the courage to say it in person? Why are people racist in the first place?

Any ideas on whether people are born racist or learn it? Are older racists a lost cause or is there hope?

Racism goes back to the caves.
Any one different from your group was probably a threat. The perception of that has not changed nor is it likely to do so any time soon. Everyone is racist to one degree or another, even the victims of racism have to work to not be racist toward others and especially towards the group(s) profiling them. Is it racist to ascribe positive attributes to a group of people? or are we supposed to just learn from each other while allowing others to live and love as well with out interference. Of course some cultures define love through the involuntary mutilation of female genitalia. I think that shows the utter weakness and degeneracy of the men of that culture and indeed the men of any "pure" and mysoginistic religious culture are weak and degenerate as the only way to exteriorize their inability to control their sexual urges is to attack and systematically repress the so-called stimulus provided by exposed women. It is not the unclad women stimulating them rather it is their own weakness and degenarate upbringing that has not allowed them to develop a modicum of self-control.
If a naked women causes an urge in you to rape her YOU have a problem not the woman who is naked.
I believe that religion has actually traded on racism and sexism to divide us against ourselves and perpetuate the myths that keep them in power

One particular reason is they can get attention on Yahoo Answers where they cant anywhere else. Yahoo is convinced that people are intelligent and have enough common sense not to publist something truly rude and nasty. Of course if the opportunity is given someone will try to push the limit. Some of these characters do have the audacity to say hateful things in person. Fortunately you can walk away and dont have to listen to it. On an open forum like this one we can share ideas freely. That freedom also allows some perverted ideas as well. We have the power to ignore and vote against the rude ones. As far as why people are racist in the first place was described by comedian Ron White. Simply, " You Cant Fix Stupid".

People are racist online because it is their true nature, and with the anonymity of the internet they can let their true colors show without much retribution for their words (most of the racist things I've seen online would get a person beat down if said in person). Of course people don't have the courage to say their true feelings in person (especially those that are not socially acceptable) because most people are cowards.

People are racist because they fear what they don't understand and what is different. They allow ignorance and stereotypes to get in the way of finding out for themselves. Some may have had bad experiences with someone of another race or lifestyle, and some people just have hate in their hearts. Racism and bigotry are learned behaviors that foster and grow when fertilized with ignorance and watered with hate.

some people might just be trying to get a response, they might not be really racist, just young or bored, maybe both.

fear of what is different, is often an excuse.
sometimes racism has been used as a political tool, to invade , so they can gain land, water , gold, oil or what ever they seek. Or to distract the public from what the government is really up to.

Maybe one day we will all grow up, and racism will no longer be a problem. By then, it might be the human race against little green or grey men. I GUESS HUMAN NATURE IS A LITTLE HOPELESS FOR NOW, education is the only way.

for spying and raping minds. If that culture knows right now what I posted then they are true stalkers. Correct ,nothing but a fact

People are racist on Yahoo mainly because they are looking at a screen and not directly at the person. They cannot be tracked, and therefore they may be a sweet old lady, who no one would suspect of being racist, but because she doesn't have to look the person directly in the eyes and say some racist comment, she will do it. Plus no one will know it is her. I know it is hard not to become your alter-ego online, but a lot of people do it anyway!

Look at this site, it says all the different definitions of racism: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&defl=en&q=define:Racism&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title

Because they have nothing better to do. Some are pure racists and some are people who are having their idea of "fun."

But I don't pay attention to it because many of those people that hide behind their computers would NEVER say that to someone's face. They just hide behind their computer.

people aren't racist on Y!A. Racist people just happen to come to Y!A. those are people who are already racist in real life and just get more bold because the internet allows them to be anonymous so they can let their inner @$$es out. it's the same when people ask or answer rudely/disrespectfully. they know we wouldn't be able to track them down or anything.

They're not just racist on YA, Their racist period, but don't have the guts to say these things in person. Instead they'd rather do it through a computer to people they never have and never will meet.

People are racist in the first place, due to a natural fear that is misplaced, and natural insecurities. This is also why children are scared of the dark; in the dark, their anxiety's take form as monsters. That's the phych answer. Also, it is much easier to be inflammatory and stupid in question format.

It's fairly disturbing.
