stay in hostels (don't associate the movie hostel with hostels!) & talk to locals to find out the best places to eat for the money! Start looking at websites to find the best hostels & book them now if you can. Beware though of some hostels that are ranked high just because they have pubs in them! My girlfriends & I traveled Europe for 2 weeks for around $1000 including airfare in Europe (not to Europe). If you look up the places you're going, you can find out when the best times are to see sights. Find sights that are free to see. For example in Rome you can see the pantheon for free & go to the Trevi fountain to throw in a coin for free. In Athens walking through the plaka is incredibly fun & free (unless you decide to buy something!). Hope that helps!

Stay in hostels and travel by rail using an Inter Rail pass.
You can find some overnight train routes that do not require you to have a sleeper berth and therefore you will not pay out for accommodation.
Look out for were the locals eat as they will not pay tourist prices and stock up from local markets and bakers.
You need to get to the UK and Liverpool for the Beatles museum.
