Hi, I have had a laptop computer my whole life, and for some reason I am under the impression that desktop computers are slow. Are they? can they be as fast as laptops?

-i am thinking about buying a desktop, but i want it for more than just school work

Desktops are as a rule, faster for the dollar than laptops. The fastest desktop you can buy is MUCH faster than the fastest laptop you can buy, and is a comparable price.

(I am confused why you would think this.. It is easier to fit the bigger, faster components in a desktop than it is to fit it into something that sits on your lap.)

Speaking in generalities, desktops are faster then laptops. This is because laptops use smaller, more energy efficient, compressed parts. Desktops allow you to use full sized CPUs, RAM, video/sound cards, mother boards, hard drives etc. Why do you think when New Line Cinema rendered the Lord of the Rings they used over 500 Desktops to create a super computer? Not, 500 laptops.

Other advantages to desktops is that they are customizable and upgradeable. You can put any part you want in it, and upgrade any part you want 3 years later. Something you can't do with laptops (usually).

Laptops generally cost 1/4 to 1/3 more than a comparable desktop and are more expensive to repair or upgrade.
Desktops are also easier to work on, as in repair, than laptops, and cheaper also.
You do loose the ability to just carry it around of course, just kidding.

The faster processors (C2E X6800 and QX6800) and graphics cards (Nvidia 8800 DX10) are on desktops. I'm not sure if there is now a DX10 capable laptop. You can not run SLI or Crossfire on a laptop. Upgrades are a breeze w/ desktops and almost impossible in laptops.
AND desktops have better ERGONOMICS (less pain on the wrist, arms, neck and shoulders).

As a computer builder, I will tell you that the possibilities of desktops are far better than laptops! Graphics design, gaming, and business demands. They can carry better and larger hard drives, better processors, more memory and better motherboards! Get one, you won't regret it !

youve have been given to be lifelike with the fee in case you have already been certain a working laptop or computing gadget, yet with a computing gadget, you are able to save it after the college year, dont must be caught at a table to do your artwork, and the liberty and customization of it being your man or woman. :D wish i helped :D
