I used to work with a superconducting magnet for the separation of Fe and Ti oxides in slurrys. These magnets were super cooled with liquid hydrogen to a temperature of 45DegK (-228DegC) and generated 4.5 Tesla in the smaller version (pilot) magnet. They were manufactured by a company called Carpco now called Oxford Instruments. These magnets are so strong that it had to be shielded with 300mm thick iron plates to absorb the magnetism. If the shielding wasn't there every piece of Ferris metal within the area would become a projectile toward the magnet. The larger magnet was cylindrical about 4 meters high and 4 meters long and had a replicating core for slurry separation

The most strongest magnets i have ever came across are out of ( beleive it or not ) A computer Hard drive !
i was at my friend last week and he told me to try and seperate them i though it was a trick but try as i might i couldnt do it ( i can now but you have to slide them apart and then it is still a struggle ) every person i have since asked to seperate these magnet`s they can`t do it !
Aword of warning here to anyone trying this , be very carefull when trying to place the magnet together as the force they pull together at could easily snap a little finger if it got in the way . I am not joking !
