If I purchase a laptop, I was wondering how far I could travel outside of my house...away from my router before I lost connection.

Stated range is 300 feet indoors
1000 feet outdoors.
The card built into a laptop is tons better than the small pcimca cards that plug into the pcmcia slot
( tiny antenna)

Look at this :

Generally it is 300 feet indoors.
Speed drops off like a rock after 30 feet
Biggest problem is neigbours signals drifting in- change the channel from the default 6 ( 11 and 1 are the next choices) and change the ssid from the defaults - generally Linksys and Default

It could be anywhere from a couple of feet to a house or two down the street. It all depends on your router's channel and how it's putting out the signal. Check out your wireless settings to see how you're doing wirelessly.

Mine is 500 feet. I think that's a common range for the average wifi connection.....

You can increase your range up to double this by adding an external omnidirectional antenna to your laptop.
