It acts as a very convenient variable neutral density filter. The light leaves polarized in the direction of the second polarizer. It blocks about half of unpolarized light at zero degrees, and it's maximum density is at 90 degrees.

Two linear polarizers is obvious. How about two crossed linear polarizers at extinction and a third linear polarizer inserted between that pair at a 45 degree angle? Explain that observation.

If the lens are perpendicular to each other, all light is blocked. If the lens are parallel, light is let through. The amount of light let through the lens depends on the angle they are to each other.
