A very polite, "I thought I was within the speed limit, Officer." is a good place to start.

I actually used "No, Sir, but I'll bet if I sit here really quiet, you'll tell me" once. I was young. I was cute. I gave him a huge smile. He was a really nice looking CHP motor cop. I didn't get the ticket.

Say 'I don't know?' Don't tell him...then he'll give you a ticket for sure. He should know, if he stopped you!
