If you get a 1505/6400 instead of the 17 inch monitor, you can get a better processor and better HD and better vid card. The HP looks like quite a nice buy if youre doing school and work. It is NO a gaming or video computer it has SHARED 128 video. HP are very reliable. check out toshiba and compaq too.

If you can wait, all companes will be having rice wars in July and dell is gonna release a couple of killers in mid/late june.

If price is your #1 concern, then go with the dell because there are coupons available!
I check out:
http://www.4computercoupons.com/

I'll instruct you how to use the coupon that is on this site (and it expires very soon!).

Right now there is a good deal on that dell you're looking at.
At the dell site, look up in the top right corner and type this into the search box: 6VAFF-DNDAGA1

It's an e-value code from the coupon site. The search should result in showing the e1705 (which has different customization criteria from the normal one). Customize it how you like, add it to your cart, then add this coupon: R72BPFDXXV6XLD

$448 should be taken off the total.

I would recommend raising your budget, because I highly recommend upgrading the battery (don't get the default one), and getting at least 2 GB of RAM. It's also nice to upgrade the screen, and the CPU (make sure it's a core 2 duo).

Once again, the coupons expire very quick. If you miss this one, check the coupon site weekly.

*note about other posters.

Dell is cheaper than the competition, especially with coupons available. Their customer support isn't great, but great customer support for value added resellers -- within your budget -- doesn't exist.

Be less worried about brand name, and more concerned about core system components.

Myself, I prefer the Acer notebooks over any other but I would have to vote on the dell. The company itself offers alot of benefits might you say when purchasing a computer directly from Dell including the option to trade in for another computer any time and technical support 24 hours a day 7 days a week and excellent warranties. You cant go wrong with a company so confident and ready to back up their product.

Neither's particularly good looking in my opinion, and neither's particularly impressive in terms of customer service. Actually Dell's getting sued for poor customer service in New York. And from my experience with HP, they're quite up there on Andrew Cuomo's "to sue" list. Anyway if you time it right, you might be able to get a macbook "refurbished" (it might even be brand new but an older model) for about $999. Um good luck

dells cost more but they last a long time and it seems that this particular dell has better specs than the hp your looking at. I have seen hps fall apart and have parts stop working after only a year or two while every dell ive ever owned is tough as nails. i suggest the dell this time and you should shop hp computers at hewlettpackard.com there you can probably customize your comp.

You should definitely get the HP instead of the Dell.
