You'll easily recognise sea legs as one is shorter than the other (depending which way the the boat is leaning at the time).
They're generally useless on land, but not bad when standing on the side of a steep hill.
Mermaids are a completely different 'tail' and probably warrant a question in there own right.

Um ... here is a boring serious answer - a ship rolls and after a while you can predict the pattern of movements that are about to happen under your feet. Difficult and painful at first as your feet slap the deck, and if your knees are locked out at the wrong time OUCH! The same thing happens adjusting to walking back on the shore side. To answer your outright if you have ever seen the legs on a piano they are something like that

Having good sea-legs means you don't vomit on boats.
By that I mean while you're on a boat. Not that you go up to boats in a harbour and vomit on them.

You're spelling it wrong, and therein lies the problem.
It's actually "C-legs". If your legs were shaped like "C"s you'd have a hard time walking too!
