I think what you need to understand here is that you can only go so far with your concerns. If you want to really look at the big picture here, then you should be feeling bad for all the small schooling fish in the ocean that get eaten by the bigger predators. It seems that your focus is on giving care to a feeding fish, when if you think about it, you're putting time and focus on fish that in a sense are going to have a very short life span. Those fish are not bred and designed to be kept for long term, they are meant to be food just as it happens in nature. I am not saying they should be abused but how much attention are you going to put into a set of fish that's going to be eaten by other fish anyways? I think they need to be kept disease free but giving them luxuries that your long term expensive fish you want to habitat your big tanks, that doesn't make much sense. They certainly are not going to suffer if you mean watch the crowding condtions or put extravagant decorations in thier storage areas. Consider too many of these fish are liable to be deformed or pulled out of a breeded set as a measure of culling. Such a situation many of those fish end up being outright destroyed. Granted as well these fish are going to in all likelyhood be eaten by those predators when put in the tank, very few are going to actually hide and be safe and last for a long time as it is.

If you have the space that's a great idea. Be aware that those little feeders can hit 2 feet plus in a pond so plan accordingly when you start buying them. Also remember that many shops would be glad to buy nice large healthy pond goldfish from you in the early spring. That could pay you back for the food and a new batch of feeders to save.

Yea, I do feel bad.

But some fish like Piranhas need their dinner.

i have a hard time feeling bad for fish, b/c they are fish. but an ecosystem sounds really cool if you have the time, patience and $ for it.
