Stalin wanted hand-picked "yes" men to manipulate the Polish people to Stalin's Communism. Keeping Poland "occupied" was expensive and a thorn in the side of Poles.

Poland and all the countries overrun by the communists in WW II now "belonged" to Russia as the Union of Soviet Socialist's Republic (USSR). Conquered nations and peoples to be 'absorbed' into the communist doctrine.
It couldn't have lasted forever. The fact that communism can not last as long as there is a spark of humanity and the irrepressible longing for liberty left in the people's hearts and minds which eventually defeats it. For many, it was escape from communism or die trying.
