similar triangles have the same angles and sides in the same proportions. So 12/8 = x/6. 8x = 72 x=9

Well one triangle is 12/8 = 3/2 times bigger than the other. So x = 6*3/2 = 9

x/6 = 12/8
x = (12/8) * 6
x = 9

While they are similar, they are not aligned that way. So you have to mentally figure out what dimension corresponds to which.
