For the same reason why warm air currents rise, causing 'Thermals' (decrease in air density causing lift), upon which gliders, hang gliders and birds can soar upwards.
The mechanics of the hot air balloon is, in effect, produced by burning propane and trapping the resultant thermal in the balloon which soars upwards controlled by the amount of propane being burned.

But hot air rises, which is not only why it floats, but also why the air stays trapped in the balloon. If there was a hole in the top, it wouldn't go anywhere. But the hot air goes up, not down, so it can't go out the hole at the bottom.

well, a regular balloon, when filled up with someones breath, is a relatively low temperature compared to a hot air balloon. Hot air balloons also operate at higher altitudes (and temperatures), where the air is thinner and cooler. As you know, heat rises, and pushes on the top of the balloon's fabric, pulling the basket up.

Because hot air is less dense and thus less heavy than air around it, and the pressure from the air around move the balloon upward with a force that is equal to the weight of displaced air.

Hot Gas in balloon is lighter than air. Hence, the balloon floats in the air.

the same reason you float in a pool.

the balloon displaces more weight in air than its own weight.

and yes the balloon is open at the bottom, but have you every held a bottle upside down underwater? the water wont go in the bottle, the same is happening in the balloon, the air inside the balloon wants to push upwards, but because it has noowhere to go upwards, nothing else can come in at the bottom either.

yahbutt: Hot air tend to travel up since it is lighter and (b) the hot air balloon has a propane heater with it just in case the air cools down too much.

Because the air in side the ballon is less dense then the air around it...since it's lighter it will rise.
