Al: The Beatles came along at the "right" time. Their sound was "bubbly" and romantic. With the song duo of Lennon & McCartney penning their music - their harmonious sound was stupor-rendering, to say the least. Harrison could write too and played a fair lead guitar, as well as, vocals. Starr ("Ringo") could act in movies and on television too - he had a good solo career. The blending of this talent was the driving force of the Beatles. John Lennon could look at a cup of coffee and write a captivating song about it. The early sixties was a time when "break-out' was in order. "Break-out" from the doo-boop sound. The Beatles' music offered anyone a change - it was fresh and lively! The focus then, became around England. The fashion world formed the Carnaby look. Then, there was the super model "Twiggy" and her promotion or the London look. Many rock groups were spawned out of the Mersy-beat sound of the time. The age of the family was now, in transition like it never was before. Girls liked and preferred guys with "long" hair - a hugh contrast against the crew-cut and "white" wall look from the 50's. The "baby boomers" now, had their appointment with music destiny. Then, appeared the later, 60s where the Beatles turned the planetary focus towards "Easternism" and "married" it with the then, culture of love & peace. The Beatles Rubber Soul album sound, shifted gears into the very original Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Not to be contained in the "now" fad sound, the Beatles produced the very original but, contraversial "Two Virgins" (often referred to as, The Beatles "white album") where the maturity of the Beatles' sound began to "rocket" ! On this album was a song for everyone to enjoy. As time passed, the Grim Reaper of change weilded his Sythe and the Beatles finished their band career with the roof-top performance of Get Back, on their final Let It Be album. Into the future heaven of the solo career each went - striking the magic chords of music with each's own unique contribution. Lennon & McCartney will ghost on in the ashelons of music history - along with Beethoven and Mozart . Society will never, again see the wand of music magic grant the wishes of the heart like the Beatles had.

CHUM radio in Toronto asked this question on a documentary called "The History of Rock". At the end of 1963 there was no one sound of Rock strong enough to take the lead. Elvis Presley had 'retired' and there was a serious sense of depression in the aftermath of the Kennedy assassination. Along came the Beatles with their new appearance, new sound, with lyrics that people could sing along with. They moved into a time when listeners needed what they had. They led the way for the British invasion of artists, and changed the way we looked at ourselves. Other groups like the Rolling Stones followed, making us ask questions about many things that we took for granted. 30 years later, we are still feeling the shock waves of change that they started.
