Coal has been mined in Virginia since the 1700’s. The 1st major coal mine in Virginia was east of Richmond in the Triassic Basin near Midlothian in Chesterfield County.

Coal isn't as big here as it is in West Virginia but there was a lot of coaling in SW VA like towns like Appalachia.
