yes, they can. most refs grew up watching the games they officiate and have a fav team. their is no bias amoungst them, most to all ref's by the age they get to the pros realize that no matter how much they like(ed) that team, they need to call a fair game or it could cost their job.

Any favorism gets driven away pretty quickly. These days, any bias would show up on video, and the referees would be punished in one form or another.

Besides, it's a job. Most referees root for a fast game with no arguments. As one umpire told me about why he calls close plays as outs, "I'm one out closer to going home."

they could personally, but theyd be fired if they werent neutral during the games
