It was planning for my first 100 mile trail run.

A year ahead of the run I developed a week-by-week training plan. (I was already a runner.) Then I followed the plan, tenaciously, and successfully finished the Western States 100, a trail run from Squaw Valley ski resort through the mountains to Auburn, Calif. Without a training plan and proper execution of the plan I could not have finished.

Unless someone interferes with me, I always get tasks done on time.
I know about and have taught Kai zen--continuous improvement--from the standpoint of improving body mechanics, doing time-and-motion studies and increasing efficiency.
I find out how long an action takes and then seek ways to to arrange tools and information better, to make the same action easier and also to do the action the simplest way.

That sort of forethought, done by anyone all the time, reduces stress, allows me to work on something in sections, and then to get it done on or ahead of time with quality control assured in my step-by-step methods.

Pre-planning works.
The last time I used it, I produced 60 complex twelve page folders ahead of their being needed, despite a series of unforeseen interruptions. I did this by reproducing the pages as I could, and using a punch to put holes in the outer folders. Then I complete them in batches of two. The step-by-step "how to for folder making" I worked from was one I wrote, as I did for all other systems we used. A new person used the system and had no problem with making these, the most complicated thing our office produced, the first time trying it.
