Yes, you can wifi through a router. If youre going nic to nic, you need a crossover cable OR a hub.

If they are both Windows PCs there will be no problem. Even Mac to PC is usually ok. But I'm thinking cross-over-cabling here, I'm not sure what you mean by "connect" to a dell desktop. Be a little clearer next time and you'll get lots of good help :D
