Yes they would. LOL you are learning already! Buy from a breeder, or pet store, you can also order one from aquabid.com or ebay.

make sure to have a filtered heated tank. Don't let anyone tell you other wise. They live so much better lives and are much happier.

A small 5 gallon works great.

A Betta would be great for a fist time fish. I own a lot of fish and the Betta male i have is prettier than any of my other fish. And There is noting wrong with getting it at walmart i have gotten most of my fish there and i have had them a while and there doing great. But i did noticed in my area the walmart isn't always the cheapest when it comes to my fish. Also if you really start getting into fish. and Get at least a 10 gallon tank, i would suggest you getting some African dwarf frogs There are very easy to keep and they get a long with lots of different kinds of fish. There very active and i find them very fun to watch. Good luck with whatever you get and have fun There is a link below that has a little about the frogs if you are interested at all.

bettas are very easy to take care of -- i got all of mine from petco or petsmart. some were bought out of sympathy. just make sure you get your little guy a home of about 2 1/2 gallons so he has space to be a fish and swim around some. if you think your betta will need friends its better to go with at least a 5 gallon.

one of the things you might consider though is people usually catch a fish bug and want more.
a 20 gallon aquarium doesn't take much more maintenance time than a 2 1/2 gallon.

I usually recommend white clouds. They are hardy, active and don't need a heater. Get at least 5 of them and they will school together. Like Bettas they should have some filtration and a tank instead of a bowl. Bettas should also have a heater though I know lots of people treat them horribly and even though they'll live in poor conditions that doesn't mean it's what they need to thrive.

G+MM, great answers!

An important thing- DO NOT PUT BETTAS IN BOWLS! They need tanks with large surface areas exposed to allow for greater oxygen exchange. Bettas are native to warm, shallow waters, and cannot survive for long in small cups or bowls where only the neck is exposed to the air.

bettas would be an excellent first time fish! they do well in just a bowl and don't need a tank with the aerators and filters and pumps and stuff. i worked at petco for a long time and we never had problems with our bettas. i believe the return policy states that if the fish does die then you bring the body back with reciept and get a new one for free.

yes they are great!
i think its the best fish to take care of and its not expensive at all
all you need for it is a bowl, water, and the fish, maybe a water conditioner to condition the water. and thats about it,feed it and you will have a happy betta that will live up to like about 3 years

a betta is a great first fish, they are easy to care for but the males can be aggressive so do not mix with other males.

Please study your fish, plan before you buy. Bettas are a great and rewarding fish to keep. However they are subject to horrible conditions and many suffer and die at the hands of ignorant hobbyists.
