Well, without the network you won't be able to call or receive calls. The only way to get "The Network" to quit following you around is either to turn your fone off or take out the sim card.

oooo, its right there in the manual on page 45. It states " to get The Network" to stop following you must.....darn it, the dog chewed the rest of mine off.
Check yours, it should give you all the information!
