Earth is into the milky way (our galaxy)

2007-06-03 11:19:33 · answer #1 · answered by Scanie 5 · 4 0

The Milky Way is a galaxy, a collection of stars and our sun is one of those stars, we are therefore "in" the Milky way so the answer is meaningless.

However, for interest these are a few pertinent facts:

It has a diameter of about 100 thousand light years (It would take that long to go across it at the speed of light)

It contains between 200 and 400 Billion stars

It's nearest Galactic neighbor is the Andromeda Galaxy that is about 2.4 - 2.9 Million Light Years Away !

The Earth, and our whole solar system, is INSIDE the Milky Way. The Milky Way is a collection of about 100 billion stars, and one of those stars is our Sun. The band of dim light you can see crossing the sky from a dark rural location is the collective light of billions of stars that are too far away and dim to be seen individually, but with a telescope you can see that this band of light is really billions of faint stars, not a glowing cloud. And every single naked eye star you see in the sky is also in the Milky Way. The naked eye stars are just unusually nearby or bright stars since we can see them individually.

Since earth is part of the milky way you might say it is right next door. Our solar system is a part of the milky way so it is hard to answer your question, Sorry.

That's like sitting in your bedroom and asking how far away your house is.
