What you're really asking is for me to decide whether I'm the best or just better than most. I have a great self esteem, so I'd build the mother of all mousetraps.

Better and best are similar to the problem of perfectionism. Perfectionism is an unhappy way to live life. Nothing is ever good enough. No one ever lives up to the standard. Perfectionism is a decision to live a life filled with disappointment.
I prefer an effective mousetrap. A trap that does what is required. Something that is simple, but effective. Added bells and whistles are superfluous to that task.
You may be using better and best to mean something similar.

No, didn't have to. I live in the South and we have always known very well that a cat is the very best mousetrap available on the planet. Nearly every person who has a feedstore....has a cat that lives there. Nearly every person who has a barn....has what is called a "barn cat". Simple stuff.... we consider them our very own border patrol for illegally immigrating mice, roaches, etc.

say you have 42 million people that want a mouse trap. If you build a better mouse trap, and then another and then another you have the potential to sell 126 million traps. If you build the best....42 million...

Better is only better than some. But, the best is better than them all. Why settle for the better when you might as well have the best. If I could I would build the best. Better is only relative to a few, but the best takes over anything that has or will be created because it is simply the best

if for the masses then better
if for the eleet and pirce is no object .. the best
if for the selective few ( like heads of state, presidents ) then gold plated limited edition with nuclear option limited release and numbered with COA for a hefty pricetag
