I've got a netgear wireless home router where my mac mini is connected directly to my modem and a Powerbook connected via Airport. Until today, everything was fine, but all of a sudden, my signal strength on my powerbook went down to near-zero. I'd like to make sure someone isn't stealing my signal, so how do I encrypt or protect my router signal?

I've tried going to http://192.168.0.1 and nothing comes up. I can get to other web pages easily and I remember this one from when I first set up my router, but for some reason it won't come up now.

I also tried going to www.routerlogin.net, but the username and password assigned to the router won't work. Please help!

How to Access the Netgear Configuration Screen
The Netgear is configured using a Web browser. After you have connected your computer to the Netgear router, follow these steps:

1. Launch your Web browser. Enter "http://192.168.0.1" into the address bar and press the "Enter" or "Return" key.
2. A logon pop-up screen will appear. Type "admin" for the username and "password" for the password.
3. Click "OK". A Netgear Settings screen will appear. All changes to the Netgear configuration are made here.

WIRELESS SECURITY MEASURES

Enable WPA-PSK
Enabling WPA-PSK* will require anyone wishing to access the Internet through your wireless network to enter a password. After the correct password is entered, a connection is established, and all data sent from the Netgear to the computer and back is encrypted. From the Netgear Settings screen:

1. Click the "Wireless Settings" link on the left side of the page under "Basic Settings".
2. Choose "WPA-PSK" under "Security Options".
3. Enter an 8-63 character passphrase in the passphrase box.
4. Click "Apply".
5. When you connect to your wireless network from a computer, you will need to enter the passphrase. In most cases your computer will offer to store the password for you.
*Note: If your computer's operating system does not support WPA-PSK (usually, your computer needs to run Windows XP, Mac OS X 10.3 or newer), enabling WEP is preferable to disabling security altogether. The steps above can be modified to set up WEP by doing the following:

1. Click the "Wireless Settings" link on the left side of the page under "Basic Settings".
2. Choose "WEP" under "Security Options".
3. Select "Open System" from the "Authentication Type" dropdown menu.
4. Set the "Encryption Strength" to "128 bit".
5. Type a 26 digit password into "key 1".
6. Click "Apply".
7. When you connect to your wireless network from a computer, you will need to enter the password.

That address won't work since it's the router setup page for the Dlink Router not the Netgear. This is what you want : http://192.168.1.1
>>>To protect your router get a password and use WEP or WPA encryption for your wireless connection. The router setup screen will walk you thru all of this. Here's an example: http://www.lycoming.edu/acad/Netgear%20Wireless%20Router%20Setup.htm
EDIT: Reset your router and run the setup again. Go to Netgear website and look at the FAQ, since i don't know the model number of the Netgear router. Here's the link that may help http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/N100651.asp

ok, go into your browser, then in the address bar type: 192.168.0.1 now it will ask you for a user name and password, the user is: admin, and just leave the password blank. Now you will be on your routers setup page. There will be some tabs and links along the side, one of them will say wireless or WLAN click it, then it will give you a page allowing you to set up A WEP

You probaly hae a neighbor downloading movies and music. Read your directions, but usually you hook up drirect, type in the address (like 192.168.1.1) into the browser type in the default security password (admin) and enable we/wap.

Guess what, if companis check, its related to your router.
