In 2006, there were 122 electoral democracies in the world - that's approximately 64% of the world states. In 1970, only 25% of the world states were electoral democracies. Dictators and abslute despots are slowly vanishing as people demand more control over their personal lives - yes, there is hope for this chaotic planet after all.
As a side note - did you realize that the United States is the world's oldest modern democracy (1776) with Denmark next, 1849.
