There are 5 physiographic provinces in Virginia: The Ridge and Valley, the Piedmont, the Coastal Plain, The Appalachian Plateau, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Ridge and Valley and the Piedmont may have the most fossils since there are a lot of sedimentary rocks in these regions. 98% of fossils are found in sedimentary rocks rocks. The Ridge and Valley and the Plateau have a lot of igeneous and metamorphic rocks and the Coastal Plain has a lot of unconsolidated sediments and they may have remains in them that are not fossilized yet.
