Not all ghosts are unhappy. Some are. There are some that don't believe they have died. Then there are some that have unfinished business or don't want to leave till their love is ready to move on. Some have gotten lost on their way to the next world and others refuse to leave. It is different for each ghost. Now spirits are a different entity of their own. They are creatures that are here to help or hinder a persons way. Some are positive and some are negative then there are those who are neither or are just miss understood.

They often are, yes. There is a difference between a "ghost" and a "spirit".

A spirit passed into the light at death and is coming back to visit. They know they are dead and are just coming to see you.

A ghost stayed on Earth after death and is "earthbound". They cannot get to the light without help, and in most cases do not even know they are dead. So they are exisiting with people ignoring them, walking through their house etc - and they therefore get upset. In some cases they seem to perceive *us* as the ghosts, and get afraid (seems to be a problem in my house right now - my ghost and I keep making each other jump, but he never lingers long enough for me to talk him over).

They are souls who got earth bound... didn't follow the light to the other side, and from what I hear, they still believe they're alive. I guess if they are unhappy, it would be because they got stuck in the time space continum.
BTW, there is a difference between "gohsts" and the spirits that do make it to the other side but come back to check in with loved ones... those are not gohsts, just spirits.

It depends the religion. In ancient Greece, they used to believe that the corpse that hasn't been burried, makes the soul a wanderer, causing trouble and death as a warn to be burried. Then, there are also beliefs that violently murdered people seek revenge.According to Sahaja Yoga, souls that used to be very materialistic when humen, don't want to pass to the Astrical World(sorry, I don't know how it is in english..) and remain on earth, causing harm, though I'm not sure if they are unhappy. There are many other beliefs concerning souls and life after death which some of them are weird and rather dark to mention...But generally, yes they are. They are souls kept away from Paradise for many reasons(as Christianity believes). And they are sad about that. And angry about that. And they will take revenge. And it will be terrible...

I am not sure I believe in ghosts, really, but I heard this theory once about ghosts being around where someone died before their time, say in an accident, and their ghost stays behind. I can go along with that

no an unhappy ghost is called a poltergeist but most ghost don't know that there are dead or died in a horrible and violent way and are seeking help or they are coming back for visitation (one way to set a ghost off that don't know that it is dead is to remodel)

I think ghosts are just halucinations suffered by folk under emotion stress or trauma. I myself thought I saw the ghost of my dead cousin when I was unwell, but I know now it was just a way of coping at the time.

According to the vast majority of people who believe in the after life and reincarnation you choose how you are going to die in this life. All part of the lesson and the evolutionary tree.
Who in their right mind would choose to die horrific deaths?
Really. "I choose to be the victim of a serial killer whose going to tear me apart while im still alive."
My thoughts on this subject is....if we choose how we die then why are there still unhappy spirits?
Why is the victim of a car crash still to be seen if that was his choice?
