Open "your sounds and audio devices panel" from your control panel. Make sure the "Mute" box is clear.
Open your device manager and make sure there are no error icons (small yellow circles) next to any of your sound devices.
If your speakers are remote, check the connections.

Download Belarc Advisor from the first url below. It's a free programme, and well worth downloading.
Run it and it will display a comprehensive list of all the hardware and software in your computer. Then you'll be able to download drivers ... either from the manufacturer of your motherboard, if it has onboard sound, the manufacturer of the sound card, if it's a plug-in one, or, failing that, you can try DriverGuide.com. (See the second url.) They have literally hundreds of thousands of drivers that are freely available. You'll find that you have to register with them first, but this is free.
