An interregnum is a time between two rulers. eg, if a king dies and his heir is too young to take over, a regent is appointed until the prince is old enough (in this case also called a regency.) It aslo hapeens in the church of England if a vicar leaves a parish. There is an interregnum until the next vicar is appointed, during which the congregation tun the services themselves, with help from neighbouring vicars for weddings, communion etc. Hope this helps.

Interregnum means "between reigns". It refers to a gap between periods of leadership, originally in feudal systems. Not to many modern political systems allow gaps in leadership, but design in a sort of overlap. Thus America Presidents get elected in November, but do not take office until January.
